Wet Belt Replacement in Slough

Professional wet timing belt replacement at Onyx Performance.

Wet timing belts operate inside the engine and run in engine oil.

On certain engines, deterioration of the belt can allow belt material to enter the engine oil system and potentially contribute to oil-pressure and lubrication problems.

At Onyx Performance, we can identify the exact engine fitted to your vehicle, inspect the wet-belt system and carry out the correct replacement procedure.

What Is a Wet Timing Belt?

A wet belt is a timing belt designed to operate inside the engine while running in engine oil.

It is also commonly called:

– Wet timing belt
– Wet cambelt
– Belt-in-oil
– BIO timing belt
– Timing belt in oil

Like a conventional timing belt, it helps keep the internal components of the engine correctly timed.

The difference is that the belt operates within the engine’s oil environment.

Because of this, correct servicing, correct engine oil specification and belt condition are especially important.

Not Sure If Your Car Has a Wet Belt?

Enter your registration and mileage and we can identify the engine fitted to the vehicle before advising you.

What Happens When a Wet Belt Deteriorates?

Over time, a wet timing belt can deteriorate.

The rate of deterioration depends on the particular engine, belt design, servicing history, oil specification, operating conditions and other factors.

If the belt begins breaking down, material from the belt may contaminate the engine oil.

On some engines this material can reach the oil pickup or other parts of the lubrication system.

This can potentially contribute to:

– Restricted oil flow
– Low oil pressure
– Oil warning lights
– Engine noise
– Engine damage
– Timing belt failure
– Internal engine damage

The exact repair required depends on the engine and how badly the belt has deteriorated.

Red Oil Pressure Warning?

A red oil-pressure warning should never be ignored.

If the engine does not have sufficient oil pressure, continuing to run it can cause serious internal engine damage.

If safe to do so:

Switch the engine off and contact us for advice.

Recovery may be safer than continuing to drive the vehicle.

Which Cars and Vans Use Wet Belts?

Wet-belt systems have been used by a number of manufacturers.

The exact timing system can vary depending on:

– Model
– Engine
– Engine code
– Production year
– Vehicle generation
– Market

For that reason, we confirm the exact engine before quoting.

Ford EcoBoost

Certain Ford EcoBoost engines use a belt-in-oil timing system, including 1.0 EcoBoost engines.

Common applicable models include:

Ford EcoBlue

Certain Ford EcoBlue diesel engines use a timing belt operating in engine oil.

Common applicable models include:

Older Ford Applications

Older Ford diesel engines have also used belt-in-oil technology, including certain Ford Lynx / 1.8 diesel applications.

Peugeot PureTech

Certain Peugeot 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines use a belt-in-oil timing system.

Common applicable models include:

Citroen PureTech

Certain Citroen vehicles fitted with 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines use wet timing belts.

Common applicable models include:

Vauxhall / Opel

Certain later Vauxhall and Opel vehicles using related Stellantis/PureTech petrol engines use wet-belt timing systems.

Common applicable models include:

DS Automobiles

Certain DS vehicles fitted with early 1.0 / 1.2 PureTech engines use wet timing belts.

Common applicable models include:

Honda Civic

Certain Honda Civic 1.0 VTEC Turbo engines use a wet timing belt.

Target application:

Is This a Complete Vehicle List?

No. Manufacturers can use different engines and timing systems in the same model depending on year and specification. Some engines also use a timing chain or conventional timing belt for the camshafts while using a separate belt-in-oil system elsewhere in the engine. For this reason, we confirm the exact engine before quoting.

Send us your registration or VIN and we will identify the correct engine first.

Signs Your Wet Belt May Need Checking

Contact us if you have:

A wet belt can deteriorate without producing an obvious driving symptom beforehand.

Preventative maintenance is therefore important.

What Is Included in a Wet Belt Replacement?

At Onyx Performance we do not treat a wet-belt replacement as simply changing a rubber belt.

The correct procedure depends on the engine.

Identify the Exact Engine

We confirm: Registration, VIN where required, Engine, Engine code where required, Timing system, Correct replacement procedure

Initial Inspection

Where appropriate we check: Wet belt condition, Engine oil condition, Warning lights, Stored fault codes, Oil-pressure related faults, Evidence of belt deterioration, Previous servicing information

Remove the Wet Timing Belt

The engine is correctly timed and the original timing belt removed using the correct procedure and specialist timing tools where required.

Replace the Timing Belt

Fit the correct replacement belt and associated parts. Depending on engine, this may include:
Wet timing belt,Tensioner, Idlers , Seals , Gaskets , Bolts , Timing covers , Other single-use components

Oil Pump Belt

Some engines use a separate belt to drive the oil pump. Where applicable this must also be inspected or replaced according to the correct repair procedure.

Oil Pickup Inspection & Cleaning

If the original belt has deteriorated, simply installing another belt may not be enough.

Belt debris may have entered the engine oil system.

Where required, we can:

– Remove the sump
– Inspect the oil pickup
– Inspect the oil strainer
– Remove belt debris
– Clean contamination
– Inspect the oil system
– Check for evidence of lubrication problems

Correct Engine Oil Is Critical

Because a wet belt runs inside the engine oil, using the correct manufacturer-approved oil specification is essential.

5W-30 or 0W-20 alone is not enough. The oil must meet the specification required for your specific engine.

At Onyx Performance, we identify the correct oil specification for each vehicle.

Final Checks

After replacement, where appropriate we carry out:

Engine reassembly

Correct oil level

Oil leak inspection

Engine start-up checks

Fault-code checks

Warning-light checks

Engine-noise checks

Oil-pressure checks where required

Road test

Final inspection

When Should a Wet Belt Be Replaced?

Send us your registration and mileage and we can advise based on your specific vehicle.

Can You Check My Wet Belt Before Replacing It?

Yes. Where the engine design allows access, we can inspect the visible condition of the wet belt and look for signs of deterioration, including:

However, a visual inspection cannot guarantee the remaining service life of a wet belt. Internal deterioration may not always be visible, so a belt can appear acceptable while still being at risk of failure.

Where replacement is recommended based on the manufacturer’s service schedule, condition, or engine requirements, we will advise you accordingly.
